Meet Susan Bowinkelmann

Susan began studying art at her local Art Gallery at the age of ten.  She graduated from the Plastic and Fine Arts Program and also the Visual Arts Program at Mohawk College in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada.  Susan worked for a number of years in clay and won awards for her large hand built sculptures , studying under some of the best artists in Ontario and abroad.   Forever the student, she started painting, but her love of shiny things and at the request of those near and dear to her, she began the Jewellery and Silversmith Program at Mohawk College.

An underlying love of jewellery has always been present.  Her Mother was a buyer of jewellery and leather goods for a major Canadian Deparment Store and it seems she passed her passions on to her daughter.  Both Mother and daughter travelled extensively and always brought back exotic jewellery from exotic places.  After six months, Susan would take her pieces apart and make them into something new.  Thus began Susan's career as a designer in silver and as a constructionist of large handbuilt jewellery.

During Susan's travels, she has brought back amber, semi-precious stones, sometimes antique stones and materials from Europe, Africa and Asia Minor.  She has used her "finds in creations "DESIGNED TO BE NOTICED. When you are wearing one  of Susan's pieces, people will stop and ask you where you got your earrings, your neckpiece, your bracelet.

Just recently, Susan's daughter, Erynn Henderson (the third generation) has taken up the gaunlet.  Erynn is in the Silversmithing Program at Mohawk College and has already earned a reputation for her Industrial Jewellery. Her web site will be up and running soon.
